I may have missed Hurricane Irene by a couple of weeks, but it’s wet and windy in New York and the forecast for Fashion Week looks like rain for the next four or five days.
Not quite fall and no longer summer. But, I’m here for spring.
Starting Thursday, the Spring 2012 runway shows and presentations begin at Lincoln Center, the new official home of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. It’s also Fashion’s Night Out, the national retail therapy, get-people-to-shop-to-boost-the-economy event that was launched a few years ago by Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
Stores here (and everywhere) are doing special after-hour parties, with celebs and sales to entice customers. Last year, a mob scene surged around the Olsen twins at Barney’s where escalators were shut off and floors closed to control chaos. Walking away from the almost-encounter with Mary Kate and Ashley, I found myself on the sidewalk standing next to supermodel Karlie Kloss.
I tell myself I’m here to seriously consider fashion’s next direction but really, the thrill is in good celebrity sighting.
